Reports indicate that Meta plans to lay off 5% of its workforce, targeting low-performing employees. Zuckerberg: The pace of eliminations will accelerate
An internal memo from Meta shows that the company plans to eliminate about 5% of its employees through performance evaluations, affecting approximately 3,600 positions, and will fill the vacant positions within this year. CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that performance management standards will be raised, the pace of layoffs will be accelerated, a broader range of layoffs will be implemented in this round of assessments, and "generous severance packages" will be offered to departing employees
On Tuesday, January 14, Eastern Time, according to Bloomberg, an internal memo sent by Meta to employees indicated that the company plans to lay off about 5% of low-performing employees and fill these vacant positions within this year.
As of September 2024, Meta has approximately 72,000 employees, which means this layoff could involve about 3,600 positions.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated in the memo:
"I have decided to raise performance management standards and accelerate the elimination of low-performing employees. In the past, if an employee's work did not meet our requirements, we would generally handle it slowly over the course of a year. But this time, during this round of performance evaluations, we will broadly lay off employees based on their performance.
According to the memo, Meta expects that by the end of this round of performance evaluations, the "normal" turnover rate for employees will reach 10%, which includes about 5% "normal" turnover rate for 2024. The company stated:
"In other words, we plan to lay off about 5% of the existing employees, who have been with the company long enough to have received performance ratings."
Zuckerberg also emphasized that the company will provide "generous severance packages" for departing employees. Affected employees in the United States are expected to be notified by February 10, while employees outside the United States will be notified at a later date.
Additionally, Zuckerberg mentioned that he is preparing the company for a "challenging year" ahead, focusing on artificial intelligence, smart glasses, and the future development of social media
