Google invests an additional $1 billion in Anthropic, a strong competitor to OpenAI
Previously, Google had promised to invest an additional $2 billion in Anthropic. Reports indicate that Anthropic will also receive an additional $2 billion in Silicon Valley venture capital financing, which is expected to raise its valuation to $60 billion, three times its previous valuation
Google is "betting" on Anthropic again.
According to a report by the Financial Times on Wednesday, Google is making an additional investment of over $1 billion in the AI startup Anthropic, having previously committed to an additional investment of about $2 billion.
In addition to Google's investment, Anthropic will also receive an additional $2 billion in Silicon Valley venture capital financing, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. It is expected that after this round of financing is completed, Anthropic's valuation will increase to approximately $60 billion, three times its previous valuation.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic is known for its Claude series of AI models and is one of the leading startups in the generative AI field. Analysts estimate that by the end of 2023, Anthropic's annualized revenue will reach $1 billion, growing about tenfold from the previous year.
Currently, Anthropic is in fierce competition with leading AI companies such as OpenAI and xAI. Anthropic's Claude model is seen as a major competitor to GPT-4, and in recent months, Anthropic has poached several employees from OpenAI, including one of OpenAI's co-founders.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated in a media interview on Tuesday:
"I am more confident than ever that we are very close to powerful capabilities... AI systems outperform humans on almost all tasks."
As the AI wave continues to spread, large tech companies are racing to increase investments in AI startups. Previously, Amazon has invested a total of $8 billion in Anthropic over 18 months, marking Amazon's largest venture capital investment ever, with companies like Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon actively participating in the competition in the AI field
