Honda Motor Company announced that it will close two of its plants in Guangzhou, China and Wuhan starting from October. One joint venture plant in Guangzhou will be shut down in October, while another plant in Wuhan, Hubei Province will cease production from November. Through measures like plant closures, Honda will reduce its annual gasoline vehicle production capacity in China from 1.49 million units to 1 million units, marking the largest production cut among Japanese automakers.
Honda China's terminal auto sales in June 2024 and the first half of the year both declined. In June 2024, Honda's terminal auto sales in China were 68,966 units, down 39.04% year-over-year. For January-June, sales totaled 415,906 units, representing a 21.48% year-over-year decline.
A Honda spokesperson stated that this move is part of the company's response to changes in the Chinese market. With the rapid development of China's auto market, especially the new energy vehicle sector, Honda is facing intense competitive pressure from domestic Chinese brands.
