Volvo Trucks announced a delay of one to two years in its plan to build a battery factory in Mariestad, Sweden. The parent company, Volvo Group, originally intended to produce batteries for battery-powered heavy commercial vehicles and machinery here. Insufficient demand for electric vehicles is one of the reasons for the delay.
The original construction plan was set to begin in 2024, later changed to 2025. It is currently unclear to what extent the mass production originally scheduled for 2028 will be postponed. Volvo Trucks has not provided specific information on the production capacity of the battery factory or the type of battery cells. Currently, its battery cells are all sourced from Samsung SDI and assembled into battery packs by Volvo Trucks in Ghent, Belgium.
