HBO documentary reveals the creator of Bitcoin? Party involved: It's not me, I didn't do it, stop making things up
Is Peter Todd, an early developer of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto? True revelation or false rumor?
Since the emergence of Bitcoin, "Who is Satoshi Nakamoto" has become an unsolved mystery on the Internet. Now, this mystery has been unveiled in a documentary...
On the evening of October 8th, Eastern Time, Cullen Hoback's "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery" premiered on HBO, revealing that Peter Todd, an early developer of Bitcoin, is the mysterious creator Satoshi Nakamoto.
However, the protagonist Todd quickly denied the claim that he is Satoshi Nakamoto on X and stated that Hoback's statement was "baseless."
It is worth mentioning that the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto has long been a topic of hot discussion. Some claim that if Satoshi Nakamoto is still alive, he may control as many as 680,000 Bitcoins, worth about $45 billion. Despite speculation for over a decade, Satoshi Nakamoto's identity has remained anonymous, with some guessing that he is an individual and others speculating that he is a group of people.
The director of this film, Hoback, is also an expert in uncovering mysteries. Previously, he produced a documentary series called "Q: Into the Storm," investigating the Q Anon conspiracy theory and receiving a 2021 Emmy Award nomination.
Traces of Satoshi Nakamoto! Who is Peter Todd?
Hoback pieced together old and new clues, then used evidence to question Todd and another key suspect, Adam Back, the founder of Blockstream, leading to this conclusion. One of the pieces of evidence he relied on was a post Todd made on the Bitcoin message board in 2010, which he believed was highly likely to be from Satoshi Nakamoto.
At the end of the documentary, Hoback asked Todd, "It seems like you had such a profound understanding of Bitcoin back then?" Todd replied, "Well, yes, I am Satoshi Nakamoto."
Todd, a Canadian, has been writing code for Bitcoin since 2012 and refers to himself as the "cryptographic timekeeper" on X platform. He is also the founder of OpenTimestamps, an open-source project dedicated to providing blockchain timestamp standard formats.
At the age of 39, Todd graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. When the famous Bitcoin white paper was completed, he was only 23 years old, outlining the vision of a decentralized monetary system for the first time. Todd mentioned in a podcast that he was about 15 years old when he first interacted with key influencers in the crypto field (i.e., cypherpunks).
In addition, Todd was involved in the so-called "Bitcoin 2.0" projects, including Counterparty, Mastercoin, and Colored Coins. In 2016, he collaborated with NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden on the launch of the privacy coin zcash and even publicly destroyed the computer used to create the cryptocurrency.
Protagonist denies the trilogy
However, the protagonist Todd quickly denied this on X and called Hoback's claims "baseless rumors".
The release of this documentary has sparked a lot of criticism online, with many in the crypto community questioning the film's conclusions. Some believe that the evidence provided in the documentary is not sufficient to definitively prove any connection between Todd and Satoshi Nakamoto.
Nic Carter, founding partner of Castle Island Ventures, said:
From a technical perspective, he is one of the most important figures in Bitcoin. He has known Todd since 2017, and generally speaking, people consider his views on Bitcoin to be very important. But I am certain that Todd is not Satoshi Nakamoto, partly because the creator of Bitcoin has a deep understanding of cryptography and digital cash systems.
There has never been a bigger mystery in history. It is said that Satoshi Nakamoto owns a large amount of Bitcoin tokens, and he managed to do this successfully, which is truly amazing. Personally, I hope we never find out who Satoshi Nakamoto is
