The list of winners for the 2024 Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition has been released, with a total of 86 winners, among which more than half are from Tsinghua University and Peking University. The winners include two high school students, Deng Leyan who won a bronze medal, and Zhang Hengye who received an excellence award. Deng Leyan has shown outstanding performance in mathematics and has won multiple awards. It is noteworthy that the highly publicized "genius girl" Jiang Ping did not win an award
On November 3rd, the award list for the 2024 Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition was officially released today, with a total of 86 winners, including 5 gold medals, 10 silver medals, 20 bronze medals, and 51 excellence awards.
Among the winners, 39 are from Peking University, and 6 are from Tsinghua University, with winners from these two universities accounting for more than half. Notably, there are two winners from high schools. One is Deng Leyan from Shanghai Minban Huayu Middle School, who won a bronze medal; the other is Zhang Hengye from Chongqing Bashu Middle School, who received an excellence award.
In the previous preliminary round, Deng Leyan from Shanghai Minban Huayu Middle School ranked 26th, while Zhang Hengye from Chongqing Bashu Middle School ranked 92nd.
According to the WeChat public account of Chongqing Bashu Middle School, Zhang Hengye, a student from the class of 2026, won a gold medal in the 2023 China Mathematical Olympiad (CMO) and was selected for the national training team.
According to the WeChat public account of Shanghai Minban Huayu Middle School, Deng Leyan is a student from Class 8 of the 2024 cohort and previously won the Weiming Award (the highest award) at the 8th Summer Camp for Middle School Students in Mathematics and Technology at Peking University in the 8th grade, as well as the first prize (second place) in the 5th National Liu Wei Cup Mathematics Competition. At the opening ceremony of the second semester of the 2022 academic year, the principal introduced Deng Leyan as a mathematical genius, stating that his achievements had surpassed those of top high school students, attributing these accomplishments to his relentless pursuit of excellence.
According to previous reports, Deng Leyan received the Huayu Principal Award for the 2023 academic year, presented by Principal Li Ying.
Public information shows that Deng Leyan ranked third in the high school group of the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad in the fifth grade; won first prize in the 4th "Liu Hui Cup" in the first year of junior high; received the Weiming Award (the highest award) at the 8th Summer Camp for Middle School Students in Mathematics and Technology at Peking University and second place in the 5th National Liu Hui Cup Mathematics Competition in the second year of junior high; in 2023, he won first place in the high school group of the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad and qualified for the finals of the 2023 Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition with a rank of 100; and won the gold medal in the 6th "Liu Hui Cup" in the third year of junior high.
However, according to the award list released by Alibaba Damo Academy, the previously discussed "genius girl" Jiang Ping did not win an award.
Alibaba mentioned in a statement that an investigation revealed that a certain Wang provided assistance to his students during the preliminary round, violating the rule of "no discussion with others." This also exposed issues such as the competition system being insufficiently refined and management being inadequate. They expressed sincere apologies for this!
