On the day the U.S. CPI inflation data was released, the S&P 500 index initially closed flat, with the telecommunications and technology sectors dropping more than 0.6% at most, the energy sector rising 0.8%, and the consumer discretionary sector increasing by 1%.
The Nasdaq 100 index initially closed down 0.2%, with chip stocks Micron falling 4%, Texas Instruments, Arm Holdings, and KLA dropping more than 3%, while Warner Bros. Discovery rose about 5.5%.
Boeing initially closed down 3.5%, with Caterpillar, UnitedHealth, and NVIDIA at least dropping 1.3%, dragging down the performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, while Chevron and Amazon rose more than 2%
