China's number of students studying in the U.S. has fallen to second place, overtaken by India

The International Institute of Education, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, released its latest annual survey on the 18th, showing that in the 2023-2024 academic year, there are a total of 332,000 Indian international students studying in the United States, while the number of Chinese international students is 277,000. Compared to the previous academic year, the number of Indian international students increased by 23%, while the number of Chinese international students decreased by 4%. Public opinion has noted that the number of Chinese international students in the U.S. has decreased for the fourth consecutive year. The Hong Kong South China Morning Post reported that Chinese international students have long been the largest group of foreign students in the United States. In the 2019-20 academic year, there were 373,000 Chinese students studying in the U.S. However, since then, the number of Chinese international students has declined year by year, and in the data for 2023-2024, it has been surpassed by India for the first time in 15 years
