Indonesia's antitrust agency responds to rumors of Grab and GoTo merger: begins studying potential impacts, unable to assess the transaction at this time

On May 21, the Indonesian Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) issued a statement in response to recent rumors regarding a potential merger between the two major ride-hailing giants, Grab and GoTo. KPPU stated that since the potential merger is still in the speculative stage, the agency is currently unable to assess the transaction. As a precaution, KPPU has begun an independent study to determine the possible impacts of the potential merger and to develop relevant policy adjustment plans. KPPU stated that business participants should conduct self-assessments to ensure that the transaction does not lead to monopolistic behavior and unfair business competition. "If violations are confirmed, KPPU has the authority to take administrative measures, up to and including the cancellation of the merger transaction."
