According to Zhitong Finance APP, on September 17, SensorTower stated that by 2025, the download volume of PC/console games will exceed 1 billion, with Steam holding the largest share due to its dominant position on the PC platform. PlayStation follows closely, while Xbox still occupies a considerable market share.

Steam not only leads in user acquisition but is also expected to set new records in revenue. Compared to the same period in 2024, the platform's game purchase revenue has grown by 15% so far in 2025, and it is expected to exceed $12 billion by the end of the year.

In terms of game genre popularity, core classic types remain the top choice for PC/console players. From a download perspective, action games (262 million), shooting games (189 million), and role-playing games (131 million) have performed the best so far in 2025.

Electronic Arts (EA.US) is currently the highest-grossing publisher by downloads, benefiting from sports, IP game series, and collaborative games like Split Fiction and It Takes Two from the EA Originals project. Microsoft (MSFT.US) and Sony (SONY.US) rank second and third, respectively, with both occupying the market through their respective PC/console game series lineups. A closer look at these two platforms reveals that Sony's content performs better on PlayStation, while Microsoft's content is more popular on Xbox. The massive download volume of Microsoft games on the Xbox platform is partly attributed to its deep integration with Game Pass.

The rest of the list includes both common popular games and new faces. NetEase (09999)'s Marvel Rivals is the most downloaded PC/console game this year, while Kepler Interactive has gained significant influence with its AA hit games Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and REMATCH Microsoft's outstanding performance this year is mainly attributed to the acquisition of the "Call of Duty" and "Minecraft" series, both of which are popular cross-platform games. On PC/console platforms, Bethesda Softworks and Xbox Game Studios account for the majority of downloads, while King holds over half of the downloads on mobile platforms.

In the AAA gaming sector, sports games like "EA SPORTS FC 25" and "NBA 2K25" continue to dominate the market, while the action role-playing game "Monster Hunter: Wilds" also performs strongly. In the AA game category, "Light and Shadow: Expedition Team 33" is undoubtedly the winner, receiving unanimous acclaim from critics. This turn-based role-playing game's downloads even surpassed those of "NBA 2K25." In the independent game sector, "R.E.P.O." has the highest sales, which aligns with its phenomenal popularity in content creation circles and social networks. Nevertheless, the second-ranked independent game "Schedule I" achieved comparable download performance at double the price.
