Meta will lift restrictions on Trump's account to ensure equal expression opportunities with Biden
Meta announced that it will lift the restrictions on Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts next week to ensure equal expression opportunities with Biden. Trump's account will be restored in early 2023, after being banned for two years following the Capitol riot. Meta stated that if Trump posts inappropriate content again, the content will be deleted and his account will be suspended. Trump launched his own social media platform, Truth Social, in 2022
According to the Zhitong Finance and Economics APP, Meta (META.US) announced on Friday that it will lift the restrictions on former President Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts before the upcoming National Republican Convention in the United States next week.
The company stated that this decision is to ensure that Trump, as the Republican presidential candidate, enjoys the same status as Democratic President Biden.
Meta stated in its announcement: "When evaluating our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should hear the voices of presidential candidates on the same basis. Therefore, former President Trump as a Republican candidate will no longer be subject to enhanced suspension penalties."
Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts were reinstated in early 2023 after being banned for two years following the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. At that time, Meta stated that additional precautions would be taken on Trump's accounts to "prevent further violations."
In a blog post in January 2023, Meta wrote: "If Trump posts further violations, the content will be removed, and his account will be suspended for one month to two years, depending on the severity of the violation."
After being suspended from Facebook and Instagram, Trump launched his own social media platform, Truth Social, in 2022
