Meta enters gen-AI video arena with Movie Gen, but release date unknown

Meta Platforms has announced its entry into AI-powered video generation with Movie Gen, allowing users to create custom videos from text inputs. The release date is currently unknown as development continues. Other tech giants like OpenAI, Adobe, Apple, and Google are also working on similar gen-AI video platforms, with varying timelines for public availability. OpenAI's Sora is facing delays, while Adobe's Firefly is expected by late 2024, and Apple plans to integrate AI video capabilities in upcoming OS updates.

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) is the latest company to delve into artificial intelligence-powered video generation with Movie Gen, the social media giant announced today.

"Our latest research demonstrates how you can use simple text inputs to produce custom videos and sounds, edit existing videos, and transform your personal image into a unique video," Meta said. "Movie Gen outperforms similar models in the industry across these tasks when evaluated by humans."

It is unknown when the product will be available to general public as it still being developed.

Several tech giants are working to release gen-AI video platforms to the public.

ChatGPT-maker OpenAI unveiled Sora back in February. Sora is also an AI engine made for converting text prompts and other inputs into video. The Microsoft-backed (NASDAQ:MSFT) AI company planned to release Sora to the public last month, but it is facing delays as testers continue to assess the product.

"Sora is becoming available to red teamers to assess critical areas for harms or risks," OpenAI said last week. "At this time, we don’t have a timeline or additional details to share on Sora's broader public availability. We'll be taking several important safety steps, including engaging policymakers, educators and artists around the world to understand their concerns and to identify positive use cases for this new technology."

Adobe (NASDAQ:ADBE) Firefly is adding AI video generation to its tool set as well. It is expected to be available by the end of 2024.

"We all know that video is the currency of engagement today," Adobe said.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is expected to release gen-AI video capabilities to users through Apple Intelligence as operating system updates are released later this month and into 2025.

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL) has also entered the AI video fray with Veo, which is being developed by its DeepMind research team.
