In February 2021, Tesla announced the purchase of $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin and sold 10% of its holdings in the second quarter of 2021. In July 2022, Tesla sold 75% of the remaining Bitcoin holdings. Since then, Tesla has continued to hold the remaining Bitcoin. The current price of Bitcoin is around $66,500. In addition to buying and selling Bitcoin, Tesla has a complex relationship with Bitcoin. In 2021, Tesla announced that it would accept Bitcoin as payment, but two months later, Musk suspended this initiative citing the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining. Musk also stated that once the majority of Bitcoin mining is powered by green energy, the company will consider resuming accepting Bitcoin payments, but the company has not done so yet.
