Tesla's Berlin Gigafactory Phase 1 Expansion Project Approved
On Tuesday, the German environmental authorities approved Tesla to build a new factory near Berlin, marking an important step towards the company's goal of doubling its production capacity. This approval involves the first phase of a three-stage expansion project, including the construction of storage facilities, battery testing labs, and logistics areas. All construction will take place on land already owned by Tesla. Tesla plans to increase the annual production capacity of the Berlin factory from 500,000 vehicles to 1 million vehicles, making it the largest car factory in Germany, surpassing Volkswagen's headquarters in Wolfsburg. However, the plan has faced strong resistance from local residents. The Berlin factory is Tesla's first manufacturing plant in Europe and is set to begin operations in March 2022. The factory currently produces Tesla Model Y vehicles, as well as batteries, battery packs, powertrains, and seats. Tesla has invested around 4 billion euros in this project and has employed nearly 12,000 workers in the region.
