Zhitong Finance learned that Amazon (AMZN.US) cloud computing division AWS announced on Thursday plans to invest €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion) in Italy over the next five years to further expand its data center operations in the country. This plan is part of the tech giant's efforts to enhance its cloud services in Europe. According to the plan, AWS launched its first cloud region in Italy in 2020 and is expected to invest €2 billion by 2029. Local media reported on Thursday that AWS will expand its data center operations in Milan.
The company stated in a press release that by 2029, this investment will support up to 5,500 jobs across the entire AWS data center supply chain. It added that job opportunities will include construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and employment opportunities in broader local economic sectors.
In May of this year, AWS was negotiating with the Italian government to invest billions of euros to expand its operations in Italy. The company's website shows that its clients in Italy include luxury car manufacturer Ferrari (RACE.US) and insurance company Assicurazioni Generali.
