According to a report by the Korea Herald on the 4th, after South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol announced the implementation of martial law and lifted it more than six hours later, the largest opposition party, the Democratic Party of Korea, urged Yoon Suk-yeol to resign immediately, stating that if he does not resign, they will proceed with impeachment proceedings.
The report stated that the Democratic Party issued a resolution containing the above content after convening an emergency meeting of lawmakers in the National Assembly that day. The resolution stated: "Yoon Suk-yeol's announcement of the implementation of emergency martial law is a clear violation of the constitution and did not comply with any conditions required for the announcement (of martial law)," and "the announcement of emergency martial law itself is invalid and constitutes a serious constitutional violation," adding, "This is a serious act of internal turmoil and is a perfect reason for impeachment."
The Democratic Party stated, "If Yoon Suk-yeol does not resign immediately, we will represent the will of the people and immediately enter the impeachment process."
According to previous reports from South Korean media, on the evening of December 3rd local time, President Yoon Suk-yeol suddenly conducted a televised address, announcing the implementation of "emergency martial law." He cited several reasons, claiming that the opposition party was manipulating the National Assembly and disrupting the country, stating that he would eliminate "anti-state forces" within South Korea.
In response to the sudden martial law order, the South Korean National Assembly convened an emergency meeting, with all 190 lawmakers voting to demand that Yoon Suk-yeol withdraw the martial law order. Subsequently, around 4:27 AM local time on the 4th, President Yoon Suk-yeol announced that he would accept the National Assembly's request and lift the martial law order.
