California joins the lawsuit against Trump's attempt to end birthright citizenship
On January 22, Jinshi Data reported that California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that California would join a lawsuit filed by the attorneys general of 17 other states and San Francisco District Attorney David Chiu, challenging an executive order issued by Trump seeking to end birthright citizenship. The lawsuit claims that the order violates the 14th Amendment of the Constitution and Section 1401 of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Bonta stated in a press release, "The President's executive order attempting to eliminate birthright citizenship is blatantly unconstitutional. We are asking the court to immediately block the order from taking effect and to ensure that the rights of American-born children affected by the order remain in effect during the litigation. This order exceeds the President's authority, and we will hold him accountable." The order was signed just hours after Trump took office and aims to strip birthright citizenship from the children of immigrants who entered illegally or hold temporary visas. The lawsuit is expected to become one of many legal battles between the new administration and California, which has filed dozens of lawsuits against Trump during his first term as a staunch opponent of his policies
