On July 14th local time, cloud computing leader Amazon announced the launch of the preview version of the AI programming tool Kiro. Unlike other AIs that "dive in and write code" upon receiving prompts, Kiro can collaborate with programmers to define requirements, system design, and tasks to be implemented before writing any code. This positions Amazon in direct competition with existing tools like GitHub's Copilot and Google's Gemini CodeAssist. The Kiro preview is free, with plans to introduce three pricing tiers later. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated that Kiro "has the potential to change the way developers build software."
