Old battery recycling: Tesla founder's new method to power AI data centers
Tesla (TSLA.US) co-founder JB Straubel gives "second life" to old electric vehicle (EV) batteries, proposing a new sustainable energy solution that utilizes cheap and scalable energy storage for new and old artificial intelligence data centers.
JB Straubel stated that a large number of old batteries still have usable capacity, and the company decided not to dismantle and recycle them, but to repurpose old batteries in microgrid projects to power AI data centers.
Redwood's first microgrid is being developed in collaboration with Crusoe, which is building a massive AI data center in Abilene, Texas, as part of the "Stargate" AI infrastructure program supported by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle. This system has become the largest project of its kind in North America, providing 12 megawatts of power through solar energy and utilizing recycled EV batteries to store 63 megawatt-hours of electricity
