Rivian is recalling 23 R1Ss and R1Ts due to a sudden power loss risk
Rivian is recalling 23 R1S and R1T vehicles due to a potential electrical fault that may cause sudden power loss. The recall affects models produced between 2024 and 2025, with issues linked to improperly grounded connections in the High Voltage Distribution Boxes. Rivian estimates that only 25% of the recalled vehicles may have the issue. The company will inspect and repair the affected vehicles at no cost to customers, and notifications will be sent by October 3.
Rivian has recalled a tiny batch of R1S and R1T vehicles due to a potential electrical fault that can lead to a sudden loss of power. The total recall covers 23 vehicles, a mix of R1S and R1T models produced in 2024 and 2025.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s release, the affected vehicles may have been assembled with an improperly grounded connection inside the High Voltage Distribution Boxes within the power unit.
The High Voltage Distribution Box’s sole job is to regulate the flow of electricity from the battery pack to the on-board motors. Therefore, an improper grounding would cause the box to shut down and the vehicle to lose drive power, which is a safety-critical function.
Rivian became aware of the issue in March and reviewed the manufacturing records, confirming that it only affected some vehicles assembled between September 25, 2024, and February 19, 2025. Rivian estimates that only 25% of the 23 vehicles included in the recall have any potential issue.
The fix will involve Rivian inspecting and repairing the ground strap joint of the High Voltage Distribution Boxes, or replacing the high voltage battery pack if necessary, at no charge to the customer.
