
"Economics" U.S. retail sales rose 0.6% in August, exceeding expectations
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, retail sales in the United States increased by 0.6% month-on-month in August this year, the same as the revised 0.6% increase in July, exceeding market expectations of a slight growth of 0.2%. The largest increase was seen in non-store retailers (2%); clothing stores (1%); sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument, and book stores (0.8%); food services and drinking places (0.7%); gas stations (0.5%); and automobiles (0.5%). On the other hand, retail sales in other store retailers decreased (-1.1%).
At the same time, retail sales excluding food services, automobile dealers, building material stores, and gas stations (used to calculate GDP) rose by 0.7%, higher than the 0.5% growth in July and the market expectation of a 0.4% increase
