European regulators tighten Tesla door safety regulations to ensure electric vehicle doors can be opened after accidents
European safety regulators are intensifying their scrutiny of Tesla's (TSLA.US) door design. Following the United States and China, the European Union will also tighten relevant regulations to ensure that passengers can safely escape after an accident and that rescue personnel can quickly access the vehicle.
The Dutch regulatory agency RDW, responsible for certifying Tesla in the EU market, stated on Thursday that current regulations may not fully cover the design of new electric vehicle doors. Therefore, they are studying a revision plan to ensure that electric vehicle doors can still be opened from the inside even when the power is cut off, and that external rescue personnel can also operate them.
RDW pointed out that ensuring electric vehicle doors can still be opened in an accident is a key focus for the European New Car Assessment Programme and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
