It is reported that Visa and Mastercard will reach an agreement with merchants on fees, ending a 20-year dispute
Foreign media cited sources reporting that Visa (V.US) and Mastercard (MA.US) are about to reach an agreement with merchants to end a twenty-year legal dispute between the two. According to the terms of the agreement, the credit card companies will gradually reduce fees over the next few years, averaging a reduction of 10 basis points. At the same time, the agreement will also relax a provision that currently requires merchants accepting any credit card from Visa and Mastercard to accept all credit cards under those companies.
Over the past decade, credit card companies have proposed several settlement plans, but none have been successful. Last year, a federal judge rejected a settlement plan aimed at saving merchants about $30 billion in fees over five years, believing that the credit card companies could make more concessions
