The S&P 500 steadies after hitting a new high, with the three major indices showing mixed performance; Nike rises 4%

The New York Stock Exchange will close early at 1 PM Eastern Time on Wednesday, Christmas Eve, and will be closed on Thursday, Christmas Day. U.S. stocks were generally steady on Wednesday.

After reaching a record closing high on Tuesday, the S&P 500 index was nearly flat on Wednesday, the Nasdaq fell by 25 points or 0.1%, and the Dow Jones rose by more than 70 points, an increase of 0.1%.

In individual stocks, Nike (NKE.US) became one of the biggest gainers of the day, with its stock price rising over 4%, following news that Apple CEO Tim Cook disclosed he had purchased $3 million worth of Nike shares.

The previous trading day's strong performers Alphabet (GOOG.US), NVIDIA (NVDA.US), and Amazon (AMZN.US) fell by less than 1%
