Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused President Trump of ignoring Congress and dragging the U.S. into a 'dangerous and illegal' war with Iran following renewed military strikes. She criticized the administration for bypassing legislative votes to halt conflict, citing risks to service members and economic costs. Meanwhile, U.S. officials stated they remain committed to technical talks with Iran despite Trump declaring the ceasefire over.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday accused President Donald Trump of dragging the U.S. back into an “unnecessary” conflict with Iran, saying he ignored Congress after renewed military action in the region.

Pelosi Says Trump Ignored Congress

“Having failed to secure a lasting peace or achieve his stated objectives, President Trump has once again dragged America back into a dangerous and illegal war with Iran,” Pelosi said in a post on X.

She accused Trump of ignoring Congress after lawmakers voted to halt the conflict, saying the renewed military action endangers U.S. service members, pushes gasoline prices higher and forces American families to bear the cost of an “unnecessary war of choice.”

U.S. officials said Washington remains committed to talks with Iran and plans to continue technical negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict, MS Now reported on Thursday.

Doubles Down on Iran

Trump on Wednesday said the ceasefire with Iran was “over” during the NATO summit in Ankara and warned he may abandon diplomacy, saying, “let’s just finish the job.”

The latest escalation followed attacks on commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, prompting renewed U.S. military strikes against Iranian targets.

U.S. Central Command said subsequent strikes targeted Iran were in response to what it called “unjustified aggression” against commercial shipping and civilian crews navigating the strategic waterway.

Congress remains divided

Efforts to require congressional approval for continued U.S. military involvement fell short after the Senate in June declined to rebuke the administration in a 50-47-1 vote.

The White House has sought $87.6 billion in supplemental spending, including $21 billion for the Defense Department, a request some lawmakers say would force taxpayers to finance a broader military campaign.
