Elon Musk endorsed the prediction that AI agents will replace traditional internet browsers, websites, and software. He agreed with a post stating these tools are becoming obsolete as users shift to personalized AI assistants for tasks like information retrieval and workflow management. This trend is driving major tech firms like OpenAI and Anthropic to develop advanced agent capabilities, although Musk's own xAI project has faced recent setbacks.

On Thursday, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Space Exploration Technologies Corp (NASDAQ:SPCX) CEO Elon Musk backed a prediction that AI agents could fundamentally change how people interact with the internet.

AI Agents Could Replace Browsers, Websites And Apps

Musk replied "True" to an X post from Mark Kretschmann, who argued that browsers, websites and most software could eventually fade as users increasingly rely on personalized AI agents.

Kretschmann was responding to a post from X user Rational Aussie, who said web browsers may become obsolete sooner than expected because heavy AI users are already shifting away from traditional online experiences.

"I think web browsers are going to die way sooner than people think," Rational Aussie wrote. "Everything is going to be done within the AI agent itself."

The post suggested that future AI agents could represent both individuals and businesses, communicating with other AI systems to complete tasks on users’ behalf.

Instead of visiting websites, users could ask their AI assistants to find information, make purchases, schedule appointments or handle complex workflows.

I think web browsers are going to die way sooner than people think.

They are already archaic for heavy AI users like me.

Everything is going to be done within the AI agent itself.

Your AI will have its own identity, you'll define the permissions for what it can and cannot do,…

OpenAI And Anthropic Race To Build The Future Of AI Agents

AI agents are designed to go beyond traditional chatbots by reasoning, using tools and completing multi-step tasks with limited human input.

The technology has become a major focus for companies including OpenAI and Anthropic as they push AI deeper into workplace automation.

Earlier this month, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities toward workplace-focused AI agents that can handle complex assignments, create documents, build spreadsheets and develop presentations.

Anthropic has also promoted agent-based tools through Claude Code and Cowork.

Musk has previously discussed his own AI agent ambitions through xAI’s Macrohard project, which he described as an AI-only software company that could replicate the scale of Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT).

However, the project reportedly slowed after leadership changes, engineer departures and the suspension of some initiatives.

Anthropic’s latest research has also highlighted growing adoption of AI agents, showing users increasingly turning to AI for longer-running tasks rather than simple question-and-answer interactions.
