Alphabet has entered the on-premises AI chip market by selling its custom TPU systems directly to customers, marking a direct competitive move against Nvidia. This shift allows clients to install Google's hardware in their own data centers for greater control over sensitive workloads. While revenue recognition began in Q2 2026, significant financial impact is expected in 2027. Consequently, Alphabet's inventory rose sharply to $9.99 billion to support these sales.

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) has opened a more direct front against Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) in the AI chip market.

Google began recognizing revenue from TPU-system sales during the second quarter of 2026. The milestone came after Google delivered the systems directly to customer data centers for the first time, CFO Anat Ashkenazi said on the company’s earnings call.

Previously, outside companies mainly consumed Google’s tensor processing units through Google Cloud, but direct system sales add another route to market. Customers can now install Google’s custom AI infrastructure inside their own facilities, an option suited to companies that want tighter control over sensitive workloads, data and operations.

Alphabet Opens a New Nvidia Front

The shift pushes Alphabet beyond selling cloud access and deeper into physical AI infrastructure. It also gives Google a clearer opportunity to compete for spending that would otherwise flow toward Nvidia’s dominant accelerator ecosystem.

Ashkenazi described the strategy as an expansion of Alphabet’s total addressable market. Standalone TPU systems create another offering for customers that need AI hardware inside their own data centers.

The financial impact is still at an early stage. Alphabet expects to recognize only a relatively small portion of revenue from existing TPU-system sales agreements during 2026. The vast majority is expected in 2027, with revenue ramping toward the end of this year.

Effects on the Balance Sheet

Alphabet’s balance sheet also shows the operational shift. Inventory climbed to $9.99 billion from $2.44 billion, while management said the company began building inventory to support system sales.

Google Cloud revenue surged 82% to $24.77 billion from $13.62 billion a year earlier. The filing says Cloud product revenue comes primarily from TPU-system sales. Still, TPU systems did not account for all of that growth.

Ashkenazi said Cloud growth accelerated meaningfully even after excluding TPU-system sales. Core Google Cloud Platform, AI solutions and AI infrastructure were also important drivers.

Nvidia remains far larger in AI accelerators, with a broad software ecosystem and deep customer adoption. Alphabet’s move does not erase that gap. It does, however, turn Google’s in-house chips into a product that can compete inside customer-owned data centers.

The battle is no longer confined to competing clouds. Alphabet now has hardware heading through customers’ doors. Its newest challenge to Nvidia will unfold on premises, not only online.

GOOG Stock Price Activity: Alphabet shares were down 5.17% at $324.23 at the time of publication Thursday, according to Benzinga Pro.

Over the past month, GOOG has declined about 4.7% versus a 1.9% rise in the S&P 500 and is up roughly 2% year-to-date compared to the index’s 9.0% gain.
