The latest regulatory filings show that as of June 30, Alphabet's remaining committed capital for Anthropic decreased from $30 billion at the end of the first quarter to $20 billion, indicating that Google injected approximately another $10 billion into Anthropic during the previous quarter. With Anthropic potentially launching its IPO as early as October this year, the market is closely watching whether this substantial unrealized gain can ultimately be realized

Alphabet's bet on AI startup Anthropic is evolving into one of the most rewarding investments in its history.

Bloomberg reported on July 24 that, according to regulatory filings submitted by Alphabet on Thursday, as of June 30 this year, the total value of the company's investments in unnamed private enterprises reached approximately $124.3 billion. According to a source familiar with the matter, this figure was "primarily" driven by one investment—namely, Alphabet's stake in Anthropic.

The filings also showed that Alphabet recorded approximately $77 billion in unrealized gains from private investments in the second quarter. Together with gains from other private holdings such as SpaceX, this pushed the total gains for the quarter close to $100 billion, driving a significant surge in Alphabet's net profit.

Anthropic is currently preparing for its highly anticipated initial public offering, which is reported to potentially take place as early as October this year. This timeline suggests that the massive unrealized gains on Alphabet's books may soon face further scrutiny.

From $3 Billion to Over $100 Billion: A Staged, High-Stakes Bet

Google's investment in Anthropic was not made overnight but was built up gradually through continuous additional investments over several years.

Google initially began investing in Anthropic in 2023 with an initial amount of $3 billion. Earlier this year, Google further agreed to inject up to $40 billion in additional investment, with $10 billion provided upfront and up to $30 billion tied to operational and financial milestones Anthropic achieves by 2030.

Alphabet's Thursday filing provided the latest update: as of June 30, its remaining committed capital for Anthropic had decreased from $30 billion at the end of the first quarter to $20 billion, meaning Google injected approximately another $10 billion into Anthropic in the previous quarter.

Anthropic has become OpenAI's primary competitor in the field of frontier AI models, attracting dual bets from both Google and Amazon, reflecting the industry race among tech giants to secure equity in top AI startups.

The report stated that the situation where both Google and Amazon are major shareholders in Anthropic is quite rare in the AI investment landscape, highlighting Anthropic's strategic position in the large language model sector.

As IPO expectations rise, Anthropic's valuation and equity value have drawn significant market attention. The stake held by Alphabet has now become one of the most valuable assets on its balance sheet.

The book gains from this investment have already had a substantive impact on Alphabet's financial performance.

Alphabet recorded approximately $77 billion in unrealized gains from private investments in the second quarter. Adding gains from other private holdings, including SpaceX, the total gains from private investments for the quarter approached $100 billion, directly boosting the company's net profit.

However, Alphabet stated that the company cannot provide further disclosure beyond information contained in its quarterly report filings. It is worth noting that the aforementioned gains remain unrealized floating profits, and their final realization will largely depend on Anthropic's IPO pricing and market performance.
