The AI competition continues to heat up as Microsoft activates its largest data center in India
Microsoft has launched its largest data center in Hyderabad, India, with Adani Group and HDFC Bank as early users. This move aims to seize the rapidly growing AI market in India and consolidate its leading position in cloud computing. Microsoft has committed to investing $20.5 billion to expand its business in India, with Azure revenue experiencing double-digit growth for two consecutive years. Global tech giants like Google and Amazon are also increasing their investments in India but face controversies related to environmental issues
According to Zhitong Finance APP, as the global artificial intelligence (AI) competition continues to heat up, tech giants are accelerating their efforts to seize high-growth emerging markets. Microsoft (MSFT.US) launched its largest data center in India on Thursday in Hyderabad, with Adani Group and HDFC Bank becoming early users of the project. This move will help Microsoft capture market share in India's rapidly growing AI market.
The activation of this data center in central-southern India expands Microsoft's cloud service regions in India to four. Along with the already operational data centers in Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai, it further solidifies Microsoft's position as the largest cloud computing service provider in India.
The Windows system vendor has committed to investing approximately $20.5 billion to expand its business in India, targeting the vast user base of over 1 billion internet users and a rich pool of tech talent.
Microsoft stated that its cloud computing business Azure has achieved double-digit revenue growth in the Indian market for two consecutive years.
Microsoft has also partnered with Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Jio to jointly operate two data centers in India.
Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India, stated, "Creating value through AI requires deploying trusted infrastructure close to data storage, team collaboration, and business decision-making." He added that the new facility is a key part of this layout.
India's large user base and AI market potential have attracted global tech giants to flock to the sector, with competition becoming increasingly fierce. Leading companies such as Google's parent company Alphabet and Amazon are also increasing their investments in data centers in India.
However, the infrastructure layout of overseas giants in India has not been smooth sailing, with related projects sparking industry controversies. For example, in the case of Google's data center planning project in India, environmentalists have questioned the rapid approval process, arguing that it did not adequately assess the potential negative impacts of large data center operations on local water resources and the ecological environment, while Indian officials have denied such controversies
