Google co-founder Sergey Brin has recently personally pressured the company's AI team to invest more effort in enhancing the capabilities of its flagship model, Gemini. Sources say that Google executives are taking a more direct management approach with DeepMind, pushing engineers to release new models faster and placing greater emphasis on commercialization.

Leadership Restructuring Highlights Commercialization Shift

Last week, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced significant adjustments to the AI leadership. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis will step down from the CEO position to become the chairman of the lab, while also serving as Alphabet's chief scientist and continuing to lead the AI drug discovery lab Isomorphic.

At the same time, DeepMind's current Chief Technology Officer Koray Kavukcuoglu will be promoted to Senior Vice President of DeepMind, reporting directly to Pichai.

This adjustment is closely related to Google's AI commercialization strategy. Brin has specifically requested the team to focus more on "recursive self-improvement"—that is, allowing AI systems to participate in designing, coding, or training the next generation of models to achieve continuous compounding improvements in capabilities.

Accelerating Implementation and External Collaboration

AI-assisted programming has become one of the most fundamental and revenue-generating application directions currently. Last week, it was reported that Google is in talks with San Francisco startup Mechanize, which focuses on building environments and evaluation systems for cutting-edge programming agents.

Brin co-founded Google with Larry Page in 1998. Although both stepped down from day-to-day management in 2019, they remain board members and maintain significant influence over the company as controlling shareholders.
