At this technology conference, Voyah's Dreamer directly targeted the plug-in hybrid version of the GL8. The Dreamer is Voyah's flagship product and the pinnacle of its ESSA platform. The architecture of its plug-in hybrid technology is shown in the figure below. In terms of fuel consumption when the battery is depleted, pure electric range, four-wheel-drive performance, and acceleration, it has a generational lead over the plug-in hybrid version of the GL8 Lujun. I believe that Voyah Dreamer will continue to compete with the GL8 in the future. This time marks the beginning of a fierce competition between the two over what constitutes a good product and how to provide customers with better technology and product experiences.
We can also make some systematic comparisons with the parameter data of the GL8 released today. General Motors' technical tagline is 'true performance, ultra-smoothness, high safety,' but it's quite odd that they didn't mention fuel economy for a plug-in hybrid vehicle. Even stranger is that the launch content for the plug-in hybrid GL8 didn't include the pure electric range (the actual 24.4 kWh battery can hardly support a long pure electric range) and only highlighted the CLTC comprehensive range of 1,370 km (which is mainly due to a larger fuel tank). The 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.8 seconds is mediocre, and the unique claim of a 5.2-second 80-120 km/h overtaking acceleration is rather puzzling.
From a product perspective, the Voyah Dreamer actually excels in plug-in hybrid technology. It boasts super-strong power, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 5.9 seconds. The PHEV version has a total system power of 420 kW, ensuring robust power output. The intelligent multi-mode drive system allows the Voyah Dreamer to perform exceptionally well in pure electric, range-extending, and hybrid modes, balancing energy efficiency and powerful performance. More importantly, the Dreamer's pure electric range reaches 236 km, and its fuel consumption when the battery is depleted is only 5.36 L, fully demonstrating the core economic advantages of a plug-in hybrid vehicle.
Overall, the GL8 Lujun PHEV's latest move can hardly be considered successful in terms of plug-in hybrid product strength, and it faces immense market competition pressure. Plug-in hybrid MPVs like the Voyah Dreamer, with their technological lead and the momentum of domestic brands' rise, are aggressively capturing the MPV market. If the GL8 wants to avoid being marginalized, it will need to bring some real technological advancements to the table.
