Waymo, the autonomous taxi service company under Alphabet, has launched an unspecified number of autonomous MPVs manufactured by ZEEKR in the United States. This ZEEKR electric compact MPV debuted in 2021, featuring Swedish design and Chinese manufacturing, with five seats and four sliding doors for easy access.
Most of Waymo's sixth-generation sensor suite is designed and manufactured in-house. After the prototype vehicles were shipped to the U.S., the hardware and software suites were integrated. Currently, ZEEKR's autonomous vehicles in San Francisco are still undergoing testing with human drivers. Unlike the Cruise Origin, ZEEKR's compact vans come with removable steering wheels, which may simplify the certification process. With the Jaguar I-Pace being discontinued, ZEEKR is expected to become Waymo's future mainstay model.
