China's ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) and Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC) are set to launch the most aggressive expansion plan in history, as severe global supply shortages have created a golden opportunity for emerging companies to narrow the gap with market leaders.
CXMT is expanding its plant in Shanghai, with total production capacity expected to reach about two to three times that of its Hefei headquarters. Equipment installation is planned for around the second half of 2026, with production starting in 2027.
YMTC is building its third plant in Wuhan, aiming to start production in 2027.
YMTC has largely overcome foreign export controls that limited its access to chip manufacturing equipment, finding ways to produce memory chips using less advanced machines. The company has also completed development of its own DRAM products.
CXMT is the world's fourth-largest DRAM manufacturer, behind Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, with a market share of about 11.1% by production capacity. This figure is expected to grow to about 13.9% by 2027.
