How to spend money from Hong Kong cards in mainland China most cost-effectively?
I've compiled the latest practical methods (including pros and cons + pitfalls to avoid), covering everything from WeChat/Alipay to physical cards.
Method ① WeChat Pay HK
Top recommendation for large amounts!
Open a Hong Kong wallet within WeChat, link your Hong Kong card, and scanning QR codes in mainland China will automatically deduct HKD at the real-time exchange rate, with 0 fees throughout (no 3% charge even for amounts over 200 yuan). Pros: Large-amount friendly, experience close to mainland WeChat.
Cons: Mainland user annual limit is about HKD 25,000, not all merchants support it, only HKD settlement.
⚠️ Never top up your Hong Kong wallet balance from your Hong Kong card, transfers and withdrawals are very troublesome!
Method ② AlipayHK
Download the standalone app, register with a +86 phone number, link your Hong Kong card, and scan mainland Alipay merchant QR codes with 0 fees. Pros: Wide online and offline coverage, suitable to use with Ant Bank.
Cons: Annual spending limit about HKD 25,000, daily transfer limit HKD 3,000, exchange rate is relatively average.
Method ③ Directly linking to mainland WeChat/Alipay
HSBC, Bank of China's Mastercard, or ZA Bank's Visa card can be directly linked to the mainland versions of WeChat or Alipay. Payment process is as smooth as a regular card.
Cons: 3% fee for amounts over 200 yuan (only suitable for small amounts), Hong Kong UnionPay cards basically cannot be linked, Mastercard/Visa will have some exchange rate loss.
Method ④ UnionPay App
Link UnionPay Hong Kong cards directly to the UnionPay app, uses the UnionPay channel, 0 fees + transparent exchange rate, covers about 30 million merchants. Pros: Bank of China (Hong Kong) cards perform well.
Cons: Must register a new account (cannot be mixed with an account already linked to mainland cards), phone number must match the one registered with the Hong Kong card. HSBC Red Lion currently cannot be linked.
Method ⑤ Nihao China
The international standalone version of the UnionPay app!
Designed specifically for overseas users, does not interfere with the domestic UnionPay app, can be linked directly using the Hong Kong card's phone number. Pros: No need to change number or cancel accounts
Cons: Some Hong Kong cards not supported (e.g., HSBC Red Lion), payment requires an extra step (first tap UnionPay → All Payment Apps → find Nihao China at the bottom).
Method ⑥ Apple Pay
Bank of China (Hong Kong), HSBC Red Lion/Pulse, and other UnionPay cards can be linked. Works for online apps (JD.com, Meituan, etc.) and offline, good exchange rate.
Note: Mastercard/Visa cards are basically unusable in mainland China; different cards debit different accounts (those with RMB are more cost-effective).
Method ⑦ Physical card POS swipe
Take your Hong Kong card (especially UnionPay dual-currency cards) directly to a POS machine that supports UnionPay and swipe. Actively choose the UnionPay channel for the lowest fees and best exchange rate. Suitable for large offline purchases (malls, restaurants, etc.).
⑧ Withdraw cash at mainland ATMs
Hong Kong cards can directly withdraw RMB at mainland UnionPay ATMs.
Note daily/single transaction limits and bank charges.
Method ⑨ Bank's own app QR code scanning
Use Hong Kong version bank apps like BoC Pay (Bank of China HK), HSBC PayMe, etc., to directly scan mainland merchant QR codes for payment. Some apps even offer cashback or low fees, suitable for specific bank users.
