The U.S. government began a partial "shutdown" on the evening of October 1st, with spot gold rising to a historic high of $3,895 per ounce. European stocks rose in early trading on the 2nd, with the pan-European STOXX 600 index hitting a new high, driven by technology and automotive stocks. The UK stock market reached a new high, and the Spanish stock market hit its highest level in about eighteen years.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose by 3.32 points or 0.6%, closing at 567.94 points, with an intraday high of 569.07 points. The UK FTSE 100 index fell by 13 points or 0.1%, closing at 9,432 points, with an intraday high of 9,475 points; the French CAC 40 index rose by 77 points or 1%, closing at 8,044 points; the German DAX index rose by 225 points or 0.9%, closing at 24,339 points; the Spanish IBEX 35 index rose by 24 points or 0.2%, closing at 15,563 points, with an intraday high of 15,582 points, approximately eighteen years high; the Italian FTSE MIB index rose by 171 points or 0.4%, closing at 43,251 points.

Automotive stocks saw Stellantis' U.S. sales rise by 6% year-on-year, with the stock price increasing by 7%. French Renault is reported to be negotiating with Chery for production in South America, with its stock price rising by 2.6%. Dutch lithography machine manufacturer ASML rose by 4.6%, while chip stocks Infineon and STMicroelectronics rose by 2.5%.

In U.S. stock futures, Dow futures fell by 21 points to 46,704 points; S&P 500 futures rose by 9 points to 6,771 points; Nasdaq 100 futures rose by 80 points to 25,098 points.

In the Asia-Pacific stock market, mainland Shanghai and Shenzhen, as well as Indian stock markets, were closed for holidays. The Hong Kong Hang Seng Index closed up 431 points or 1.6%, closing at 27,287 points, with a turnover of nearly 222.5 billion. Taiwan stocks rose by 1.5%, Japanese stocks rose by 0.9%, South Korean stocks rose by 2.7%, and Australian and New Zealand stock markets rose by 1.1% and 0.1%. The Singapore Straits Times Index rose by 58 points or 1.4%, closing at 4,381 points. Malaysian and Thai stock markets rose by 1.1% and 1.3%, while Philippine and Indonesian stock markets rose by 0.2% and 0.5%, respectively. The Vietnamese markets in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City each fell by about 0.5%
