The silver held in the London vaults increased by nearly 54 million troy ounces in October, exceeding the weight of 100 iconic double-decker buses in the UK capital, alleviating the extreme "short squeeze" phenomenon that had previously caused prices to far exceed the metal inventories in Shanghai and New York. The increase in holdings in the London vaults was driven by a historic arbitrage opportunity created by market tensions, attracting inventories from other warehouses, including the New York COMEX and the Shanghai Futures Exchange. The latest influx of metal has eased the tight conditions in the London market, with the current spot price trading slightly below the New York futures price. Daniel Ghali, a commodity strategist at TD Securities, estimates that there are nearly 200 million ounces of silver available for free trading or borrowing in the market
