S&P Global announced that personal computer and server manufacturer Dell Technologies (DELL.US), US intelligence data analysis contractor Palantir (PLTR.US), and US insurance industry leader Erie Indemnity Co. (ERIE.US) will join the S&P 500 index components. American Airlines (AAL.US), e-commerce platform Etsy (ETSY.US), and Bio-Rad Laboratories (BIO.US) will be removed from the S&P 500 index. These specific changes will take effect before the start of US stock trading on September 23. To be included in the S&P 500 index components, a company must have accumulated profits in the past four quarters and have recorded profits in the most recent quarter. Dell Technologies has been profitable every quarter since 2019, while Palantir went public in 2020 and has been profitable every quarter since the fourth quarter of 2022. The current market values of the two stocks are over $72 billion and over $67 billion respectively, with the median market value of S&P 500 index components being $33.5 billion
